Why Mosquitoes Bite Some People More Than Others

If you've ever spent a summer evening outdoors with friends and noticed you're the only one constantly swatting mosquitoes, you're not imagining things. While some people seem to attract mosquitoes like magnets, others escape with barely a bite.

Understanding what attracts mosquitoes can help you reduce your chances of being bitten—and lower your risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Mosquitoes Don't Bite Everyone Equally

The first thing to know is that mosquitoes aren't simply flying around randomly looking for someone to bite.

Female mosquitoes—the ones that bite—use an impressive combination of senses to locate a blood meal. They can detect carbon dioxide from more than 30 metres away, sense body heat, identify certain chemicals released through the skin, and even use their vision to find potential hosts.

Researchers have discovered that every person produces a unique combination of body odours, making some individuals naturally more attractive to mosquitoes than others.

Your Breath Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think

One of the strongest mosquito attractants is carbon dioxide.

Every time we exhale, we release carbon dioxide into the air. Mosquitoes use specialized receptors to detect these tiny plumes, helping them locate people from surprising distances.

People who naturally produce more carbon dioxide tend to attract more mosquitoes. This includes:

  • Larger adults
  • Pregnant women
  • People who are physically active
  • Anyone breathing more heavily after exercise

This is one reason mosquitoes often seem especially persistent after an evening walk or bike ride.

Your Skin Chemistry Matters?

Once mosquitoes get close enough, they begin relying on your skin chemistry.

Our skin naturally produces hundreds of different compounds through sweat and the activity of normal skin bacteria. These bacteria break down sweat into chemicals that create each person's unique body scent.

Research has found that certain combinations of these skin chemicals are particularly attractive to mosquitoes. In other words, your natural skin microbiome may influence how many bites you receive.

Scientists are actively studying these bacterial communities in hopes of developing better mosquito repellents in the future.

Does Blood Type Matter?

One of the most common questions is whether mosquitoes prefer certain blood types.

The answer appears to be yes—but only to a degree.

Several studies suggest that mosquitoes are more attracted to people with Type O blood than those with Type A, while Type B falls somewhere in between. However, blood type is only one of many factors influencing mosquito behaviour.

Because mosquitoes cannot know your blood type directly, researchers believe they may detect chemical signals released through the skin that are associated with different blood groups.

While blood type may slightly influence attractiveness, it is far less important than factors such as body odour, carbon dioxide, and skin chemistry.

Can Clothing Make a Difference?

Surprisingly, yes.

Mosquitoes use vision as well as smell.

Research has shown they are more likely to be attracted to darker colours such as:

  • Black
  • Navy blue
  • Dark red

Lighter colours—including white, beige, and pale pastels—appear less attractive because they reflect more light and make it harder for mosquitoes to distinguish potential hosts.

Loose-fitting clothing also provides an added benefit by making it more difficult for mosquitoes to bite through the fabric.

Does Drinking Alcohol Attract Mosquitoes?

Some studies suggest that alcohol consumption may increase mosquito attraction.

Researchers believe alcohol may slightly raise body temperature and alter the chemicals released through the skin, making some individuals more noticeable to mosquitoes.

While more research is needed, limiting alcohol may modestly reduce your attractiveness to mosquitoes—though it's unlikely to eliminate bites entirely.

The Best Ways to Protect Yourself

Fortunately, there are several evidence-based ways to reduce mosquito bites.

Health Canada recommends:

  • Using insect repellents containing DEET or icaridin (also known as picaridin).
  • Wearing long sleeves and long pants when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Choosing light-coloured clothing.
  • Eliminating standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed.
  • Installing or repairing window screens.
  • Avoiding outdoor activity during dawn and dusk when many mosquito species are most active.

Natural products such as citronella candles may provide limited protection in certain situations, but they are generally less effective than approved insect repellents.

Why Preventing Mosquito Bites Matters

For most Canadians, mosquito bites are simply an itchy annoyance.

However, mosquitoes can occasionally transmit diseases such as West Nile virus, which is present in parts of Canada during the warmer months. While most infected people experience either no symptoms or only mild illness, older adults and people with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of developing serious complications.

This is why public health experts recommend taking mosquito prevention seriously, particularly during periods of increased mosquito activity.

You Can't Change Your Body Chemistry—But You Can Reduce Your Risk

While genetics and natural body chemistry influence how attractive you are to mosquitoes, they don't determine whether you'll spend the summer covered in itchy bites.

Simple measures such as wearing appropriate clothing, using an effective insect repellent, removing standing water, and avoiding peak mosquito activity can dramatically reduce your chances of being bitten.

The next time it seems like mosquitoes have chosen you as their favourite target, remember—it's probably not your imagination. It may simply be the unique combination of your breath, body chemistry, and skin bacteria that makes you stand out.
