Enhancing Skin Hydration with Vitamins and Collagen

You likely know that keeping your skin well hydrated is one of the main keys for supple, younger looking skin that is also healthy. But when it comes to keeping your skin hydrated, most people only think of two ways to do that: drink plenty of water and use a moisturizing lotion or cream daily.

While those are important, taking the right vitamins and supplements is also key. You may not think of vitamins and supplements as being helpful to your skin’s hydration, but they can make a real difference. Let’s get a look at the vitamins and supplements that can help your skin stay hydrated and supple.

One - Vitamin D

Your body makes Vitamin D naturally when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Still, many people are Vitamin D deficient, as they just don’t get enough daily sun exposure to keep their levels of this important vitamin high enough, especially in the winter months and if they live in the Northern latitudes. Plus, many people also want to avoid too much sun exposure with its skin damaging UV rays. If you are Vitamin D deficient, you may experience dry, flaky skin. If you decide to take a supplement, remember that Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, so be sure to take it with food, preferably with something high in fat, such as avocado.

Two - Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and is known for helping to keep your immune system healthy. But Vitamin C is also essential to your skin’s health, as it promotes the production of the natural fats within your skin and also strengthens the cells in the stratum corneum, which is the outer layer of your skin. A healthy stratum corneum is essential in preventing skin dryness. In addition to a supplement, you can also use a Vitamin C serum to spread on your facial skin, twice a day. Look for serums in concentrations of between ten and twenty percent. Anything less than ten is likely not going to be effective and over twenty percent can be irritating. Also make sure the Vitamin C serum you choose is packaged in a dark bottle, as the liquid can break down on exposure to light.

Three - Fish Oil

Fish oil is a type of fat that comes from the tissues of fatty fish such as herring, tuna, sardines, salmon and mackerel. These oils are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are critical building blocks for your cell membranes. They are also anti-inflammatory and help your skin to keep moisture locked inside. When choosing a fish oil supplement, look for brands that have been tested for heavy metals, such as mercury.

Four - Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is made naturally within your body and is found within your skin, as well as your eyes and connective tissue. Although this important compound is made by your body, levels decrease as you age, giving you less of its protective benefits, which include drawing water into tissues to keep them moist.

Five - Collagen

Collagen is the main structural building block of your skin, so it’s not surprising that it is crucial for moist, healthy appearing skin. As you age, and as your skin is increasingly exposed to such environmental factors as UV light, the collagen in your skin can become weak and can actually get rigid and break down. Taking a good quality marine collagen supplement can increase the elasticity of your skin and restore suppleness.

DeepMarine Collagen is manufactured using only the scales and skins of wild-caught fish from cold North Atlantic waters. Deep Marine Collagen contains no fillers of any kind and is hydrolyzed into very small particles for easy absorption and use by your body.
